Chrome and Firefox are the two browsers most people have actually used, and the choice between them has changed shape over the years. It is no longer really about speed — both are fast enough that you will not notice the difference in daily browsing. It is about who controls the engine your web runs on, and how much of your activity is visible to the company that built it.
Engine, ecosystem and defaults
Chrome runs on Blink, Google's fork of WebKit, and it is the reference implementation the rest of the web is tested against. That is genuinely useful: sites break in Chrome less often than anywhere else, and if something does break, it gets fixed quickly. Chrome also has the tightest integration with Google's services, so if your work lives in Gmail, Drive and Meet, everything simply connects. The cost is visible in our privacy score. Chrome ships with no tracker blocking and no ad blocking of its own, and Google's business model depends on advertising, so the defaults lean toward data collection rather than away from it.
Firefox runs on Gecko, the last major browser engine not derived from Chromium or WebKit. Choosing it is partly a bet that the web is healthier with more than one engine in it. Practically, Firefox blocks trackers by default, includes fingerprinting protection, and is fully open source, so its privacy claims can be checked rather than taken on trust. It also has the strongest extension story of the two: Firefox still supports the extension APIs that powerful content blockers rely on, while Chrome's move to Manifest V3 has narrowed what those extensions are allowed to do. If uBlock Origin at full strength matters to you, that difference is decisive.
Customisation and extensions
Firefox is also the more customisable of the two by some distance. Chrome gives you themes and toolbar tweaks; Firefox lets you rearrange the interface, and its config layer exposes settings Chrome simply does not surface. Whether that is a feature or a distraction depends entirely on how much time you want to spend configuring a browser.
Both sync across desktop and mobile, and both run everywhere — Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android — so neither locks you to a platform.
Which should you choose?
Choose Chrome if you live inside Google's services, want the browser that web developers test against first, and treat privacy as something you would rather handle with a separate tool.
Choose Firefox if you want meaningful tracker and fingerprinting protection without installing anything, you rely on content blockers that Manifest V3 restricts, or you want to support an independent engine. The practical cost is occasional friction on a site built and tested for Chrome, which is rarer than it used to be but has not disappeared.
