Firefox and Brave are both aimed at people who have decided Chrome's defaults are not good enough, and they arrive at that from different directions. Firefox is the independent, open-source browser with its own engine. Brave is a Chromium browser that treats blocking as the product. Both score well on privacy in our ratings — Brave takes 5, Firefox 4 — and the difference between them matters less than what you give up on either side.
Gecko versus Chromium
The engine is the fundamental split. Firefox runs Gecko, the last major engine not derived from Chromium or WebKit, and using it is a small act of support for a web that is not entirely Google's to define. Brave runs Blink, which means perfect site compatibility and access to the Chrome Web Store, but also means it inherits Chromium's direction, including the Manifest V3 extension restrictions Google set. Firefox still supports the older extension APIs that let content blockers filter aggressively, which is why it scores 5 for extensions — the highest we award.
Where each one is ahead
On out-of-the-box blocking, Brave is ahead. Its Shields stop ads, trackers and fingerprinting by default, dismiss cookie consent banners, and strip targeted advertising from YouTube. Firefox blocks trackers and fingerprinting but does not block ads without an extension, so a fresh Firefox install is a quieter web than Chrome but a noisier one than Brave. Brave also includes Tor windows for genuine IP anonymity, which Firefox has no equivalent for.
Firefox is ahead on transparency and control. It is fully open source, so its privacy claims can be audited rather than trusted, while Brave's source is only partially open. Firefox is also the more customisable browser, exposing a configuration layer that lets you change behaviour Brave keeps fixed. And Firefox has no cryptocurrency component; Brave Rewards is optional and off by default, but it exists, and for some people that alone settles the question.

Which should you choose?
Choose Firefox if you want an independent engine, fully auditable code, the strongest extension support available, and no crypto anywhere near your browser. You will want to add a content blocker on day one.
Choose Brave if you want maximum blocking with zero configuration, Chrome-identical compatibility, and built-in Tor windows — and you are comfortable with a Chromium browser and an optional rewards system you can ignore. For most people switching away from Chrome, Brave is the easier landing and Firefox is the more principled one.
