Best crypto wallet extensions

The best crypto wallet browser extensions in 2026: five self-custody wallets with public audits or open source code, ranked, with past incidents.

5 extensions includedLast updated November 2026

A wallet extension holds your keys and signs transactions for websites, so it is the one extension where a mistake can cost money you cannot get back. The main thing to know in 2026 is that fakes and compromised updates are the real threat: install only from the wallet's official site, and prefer wallets that publish their code or their audit reports.

Our five ranked picks cleared a strict bar of public audits, open source code or a long track record, and each review states past incidents plainly. The order reflects safety evidence and transparency first, then coverage. This is a reference page, not investment advice.

Fake wallet extensions in browser stores steal recovery phrases. Install only from the link on the wallet's official website, and never type your recovery phrase into a website, pop-up or support chat.

1.Rabby Wallet

Chrome

Rabby is a free, open source wallet from the DeBank team, built for people who use decentralised apps on Ethereum and other EVM chains. Its central idea is to show you what a transaction will do before you sign it. The store listing describes pre-transaction risk scanning and a preview of the balance change, and the wallet is designed for a smooth multi-chain experience.

The code is on GitHub under an MIT licence, and Least Authority audited the extension, with a final report in December 2024 and a second review in September 2025. It handles EVM networks only, so Solana and Bitcoin users need another wallet. It is in the Chrome Web Store, so it also installs in Chromium browsers such as Edge and Brave, but there is no Firefox or Safari version.

One past incident belongs here. In October 2022, less than a month after Rabby Swap launched, an attacker exploited a flaw in the Rabby Swap smart contract to move tokens users had approved, and Rabby told users to revoke their approvals. Reports differed on the amount lost. Pre-signing checks reduce risk but do not remove it, so read what you approve. For most DeFi users on EVM chains, this is our first choice.

2.MetaMask

Chrome
Firefox
Edge

MetaMask is the best-known browser wallet, made by Consensys, and its Chrome listing shows about 12 million users. It is self-custodial, so you hold the keys, and it signs transactions for the sites you connect to. The Chrome listing names Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana and BNB Chain among its supported networks.

It has the broadest browser coverage in this list, with Chrome, Firefox and Edge listings, and its download page also names Brave and Opera. The Chrome version runs on Manifest V3. The code is public on GitHub, and MetaMask's security page lists audits including Least Authority's review of the extension's seed phrase implementation in 2022, plus a HackerOne bug bounty. In 2022 Halborn disclosed the "Demonic" flaw, which affected several extension wallets including MetaMask; fixes were released and the wallet providers reported no evidence it was exploited.

Two warnings. The source is viewable, but the licence is a custom Consensys one that bars commercial reuse, so it is not open source in the strict sense. The extension also needs permission to read and write every web page, as its listing explains. Fake wallet extensions are common, so use the link from MetaMask's official site. Choose it when compatibility matters most.

3.Phantom

Chrome

Phantom started on Solana and is now a multichain wallet. Its Chrome listing names Solana, Ethereum and Polygon, with Ledger support for added security. It is self-custodial: Phantom says it never has access to your funds, and no name, email or phone number is needed to set it up.

The listing highlights scam detection that flags malicious transactions. Least Authority audited the wallet's mobile app and browser extension in a report dated 7 June 2024, with its suggestions resolved. Phantom also runs a bug bounty paying up to $50,000. It says other top firms have audited the code, with reports linked from its security page, but the page does not name them. In 2022 the "Demonic" flaw affected Phantom and other extension wallets; Phantom says fixes began rolling out in January 2022, and no exploitation was reported.

The trade-off is transparency. We did not find a public source repository for the extension, so you rely on audits and Phantom's word rather than reading the code yourself. The Firefox listing has not been updated since May 2025, so we link only the Chrome Web Store version. Best for Solana users and anyone who wants one wallet across several chains.

4.Zerion Wallet

Chrome

Zerion is a self-custodial wallet that doubles as a portfolio tracker. Its Chrome listing describes support for Solana, Ethereum and more than 50 chains, swaps, portfolio and transaction history, built-in security checks and Ledger connections. It says your keys and data stay under your control.

The extension's code is on GitHub under GPL-3.0. Zerion says Cure53, SlowMist, Zokyo and Secfault Security have audited it, and it runs a live bug bounty on Immunefi. The developer states in the store listing that it will not collect or use your data, and says it never cross-associates or shares wallet addresses.

One gap keeps it below Rabby and MetaMask: Zerion's security page names the auditors but gives no dates or report links, so we could not check what each audit covered. The design leans toward active traders, with XP rewards, alerts and trending token feeds, which you can ignore. It is in the Chrome Web Store only, with no Firefox or Safari version. Pick it if you want one tidy wallet that also shows your whole portfolio.

5.Rainbow

Chrome
Firefox
Edge

Rainbow is a lighter wallet for Ethereum and its layer 2 networks, made by Rainbow Studio, Inc. It is open source under GPL-3.0 and aims to be simple rather than exhaustive. Out of the box it supports Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and Polygon, plus BNB Smart Chain without a custom RPC, and it discovers your tokens automatically.

Useful touches include an Impersonation mode that lets you watch any wallet and try apps from its point of view, a search menu opened with Cmd or Ctrl and K, keyboard shortcuts for switching wallets, and Flashbots protection against front-running. Its README says it was among the first extensions built on Manifest V3, which bans remotely hosted code. It has listings for Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

It ranks last for one reason: we found no published third-party audit of the extension, so you are relying on public code and community review. Its record is clean and the repository is active, but that is weaker evidence than a named audit. It is also EVM-only and much smaller than the others, with about 90,000 Chrome users. Best for newcomers who want a simple open source wallet and accept that gap.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest crypto wallet browser extension?

No extension is risk free, but Rabby has the strongest mix of evidence in our list: MIT-licensed code, public Least Authority audits and a preview of what a transaction will do before you sign. MetaMask offers the widest support and a long audit trail. Whichever you choose, install it only from the wallet's official site.

What is a good MetaMask alternative?

Rabby is the closest alternative for Ethereum and other EVM chains, with open source code and pre-transaction risk scanning. Phantom suits Solana users, and Zerion covers Solana, Ethereum and more than 50 chains. Rainbow is a simpler open source option for EVM networks.

Are Ledger and Trezor browser extensions?

No, they are hardware devices that keep your signing keys off your computer, not browser extensions. Some wallets here can connect to a Ledger, including Phantom and Zerion. A hardware device adds a physical confirmation step, which helps if the extension or browser is compromised.

How do I avoid fake wallet extensions?

Open the extension's store page from a link on the wallet's official website, not from a search result or an ad. Fake wallet extensions have appeared in the Chrome Web Store, including one in 2026 that posed as a colour tool and sent users to a fake imToken import page. Never enter your recovery phrase into a website, pop-up or support chat.
