Firefox and Safari are the two remaining browsers that do not run on Google's engine, which makes this a more interesting comparison than the ratings suggest. Firefox runs Gecko, Safari runs WebKit, and between them they are what stops the web from being a single-vendor platform.
Platform decides a lot of this
Their circumstances are completely different, though. Safari exists only on Mac and iOS. Firefox runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android. If any of your devices are not made by Apple, the comparison largely resolves itself — Safari cannot follow you, and Firefox can.
On Apple hardware, Safari's argument is efficiency. It is built against the same power and graphics layers as the operating system, and the battery difference over a working day on a laptop is noticeable. It scores 5 for speed against Firefox's 4, and it reaches that while drawing less power. It also integrates with Keychain, Handoff, Apple Pay and iCloud Tabs in ways no third-party browser is permitted to match, and Private Relay hides your IP if you subscribe to iCloud+.
Control, extensions and privacy
Firefox's advantages are control and reach. It scores 5 for customisability against Safari's 2, and that gap is not close — Safari offers a handful of preferences while Firefox exposes a configuration layer that reaches into rendering and network behaviour, plus interface restyling for anyone willing to write CSS. Extensions follow the same pattern: Firefox scores 5, Safari 3, because Safari's extension model is restrictive and its library thin by comparison. Firefox also still supports the extension APIs that let content blockers work without limits.
On privacy both score 4, and both block trackers and fingerprinting by default. The difference is verifiability. Firefox is fully open source and run by a non-profit; Safari is closed source from a company whose privacy posture is genuinely good but must be taken on trust. Apple's business model does not depend on advertising the way Google's does, which is the strongest structural argument in Safari's favour.
One wrinkle for developers: on iOS every browser is required to use WebKit, so Firefox on an iPhone is Safari's engine wearing a different interface. The engine choice only exists on desktop.
Which should you choose?
Choose Safari if you are entirely within Apple's ecosystem and want the most efficient browser on the hardware, with strong privacy defaults and nothing to configure.
Choose Firefox if you use any non-Apple device, want serious extension and customisation depth, or want a browser whose privacy claims you can audit rather than trust.
