Facebook Container

Mozilla's extension that locks Facebook into its own container so it cannot follow you around.

About Facebook Container

Facebook Container is a Mozilla extension that keeps Facebook in a separate Firefox container. When you install it, it signs you out of Facebook and deletes the cookies Facebook uses to follow you. After that, Facebook opens in its own blue container tab and links to other sites open outside it, so Facebook has a harder time tying your visits elsewhere to your account.

The trade-off is that anything relying on a Facebook login on another site stops working: Like buttons, embedded comments and sign-in with Facebook. Share buttons still work, but Mozilla warns that using them passes details of the page you shared to Facebook. The extension does not protect what Facebook already knows about you, or what you do on Facebook itself.

It is also in maintenance mode: Mozilla's repository says only minor site-list updates and security fixes, with no new features. The last store release was 2.3.12 in March 2025, though the repository saw activity in October 2026. Firefox's Enhanced Tracking Protection now blocks social media trackers and partitions cookies by site, which covers part of the same ground. If you use Facebook on Firefox and want to keep using it, it is still an easy win.

Pros and cons

  • Isolates Facebook in its own container with almost no setup
  • Made by Mozilla, open source under MPL-2.0
  • Mozilla says it does not collect your usage data
  • Popular, with about 740,000 Firefox users
  • Firefox only
  • Maintenance mode: Mozilla says it is not adding new features
  • Facebook Like buttons, embedded comments and logins on other sites stop working

Permissions

It can read and change data on all websites, manage cookies and containers, clear browsing data and manage other extensions. It needs this to sort Facebook traffic into its container.
