About Userscripts
Userscripts is a small, open source userscript manager built for Safari. It is a free app from the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and its source is public on GitHub under GPL-3.0. It runs JavaScript and CSS on the sites you choose, and it keeps your scripts as plain .user.js files in a folder you pick.
That file-based approach is its best idea. On Mac you can edit scripts in the built-in editor, and on any device in a text editor you prefer, and a folder in iCloud can carry them between devices. On iOS you install a script by opening a .user.js link in Safari or by saving the file into the folder. It supports common metadata such as @match, @run-at and @inject-into, with its own set of GM functions.
The developer's privacy policy says it does not collect any data from users. It is not as feature-rich as the Chrome and Firefox managers, and the project documents some quirks, such as iCloud sync delays and needing to open the popup after editing files externally. Tampermonkey also has a paid Safari app, but Userscripts is the free, open one. The latest stable GitHub release is from January 2026. For Safari, it is where we would start.
Pros and cons
- Free and open source under GPL-3.0
- Works on Safari for iPhone, iPad and Mac
- Says it collects no data
- Scripts are plain .user.js files in a folder you choose
- Safari only
- Fewer features than Tampermonkey or Violentmonkey
- Your script files must live in a folder it can read
Permissions
It needs Safari's permission to read and change the websites where your scripts run, which you can limit per site. It also needs access to the folder where you keep your script files.
