About Video Speed Controller

Video Speed Controller does one job: it gives any HTML5 video or audio player the speed controls that sites hide or cap. It was written by Ilya Grigorik and is open source under the MIT licence. Its Chrome listing is offered under his own name, which matters in a category with so many copycats.

Once installed, a small speed indicator appears in the corner of the video. You can click it, or use the keyboard: S slows down, D speeds up, R resets, and Z and X rewind or skip ten seconds. Every key is remappable, the speed range runs from 0.07x to 16x, and you can set a default speed for particular sites or have it remember your last speed.

There are limits. It is a Chrome extension only. The Firefox listings are unofficial ports by other developers, and we do not rank them. It has no volume boost or filters, and it runs a script on every web page, though its manifest requests no permission beyond storage. The store rating is 4.0 from about 4,500 ratings. For Chrome users who want a lean, inspectable speed tool and do not need extras, it is a safe choice.

Pros and cons

  • MIT licensed, with the code on GitHub and recent releases
  • Asks only for storage plus page scripts, with no extra permissions
  • Speeds from 0.07x to 16x with fully remappable shortcuts
  • Per-site default speeds and an option to remember your last speed
  • Chrome Web Store only: Firefox versions are unofficial ports
  • Store rating of 4.0 is lower than some rivals
  • No volume boost, filters or audio effects

Permissions

It runs scripts on every web page, including local files, to find video and add controls. It requests only the storage permission, to save your settings.
