About Awesome Screenshot & Screen Recorder

Awesome Screenshot is the broadest tool on the list. One extension captures the full page, a selected area or the whole screen, lets you annotate, crop and blur the result, and records your tab, desktop or webcam with a microphone. You can save everything to your own disk or to an online account that gives you a share link. It is the only pick with a Safari route, through a free Mac app.

It is well used and maintained: about 4 million Chrome users, a September 2026 update and a Recommended badge from Firefox. Chrome runs it on Manifest V3. Sending shots to Jira, Slack and similar tools, and downloading uploaded videos as MP4, are marked Premium in its Firefox listing.

The trade-offs are trust and reach. In 2014 reports said an earlier version fed browsing-history URLs to a crawler. We found no recent incident, and Chrome shows a clean record. Still, it asks for access to all sites and cookies, and its privacy policy lists usage data such as pages visited. Choose it if you want one tool, and use the local-save options if you prefer to keep files private.

Pros and cons

  • Screenshots and screen recording in a single extension
  • Annotate, crop and blur screenshots; record a tab, desktop or webcam
  • Save locally or to an account for a share link
  • Recommended by Firefox, and has a Safari route through a Mac app
  • Asks for access to all sites, plus cookies
  • Some sharing and download features are Premium
  • A 2014 data-collection controversy still turns up in searches

Permissions
